Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Upgrades
Is your home protected? As of January 1, 2026, the Ontario Fire Code has updated its requirements for Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms. At Alderock Electric, we ensure your home meets these new standards for maximum safety.
The 10-Year Replacement Rule
Smoke and CO alarms don't last forever. Most sensors lose reliability after a decade.
- Mandatory Replacement: Alarms must be replaced every 10 years per the Ontario Fire Code.
- Check the Date: If your unit was made before 2016, or the date is missing, it is expired.
- Reliability: A "test" chirp only checks the battery, not the sensor's ability to detect smoke or gas.
New 2026 Requirements
The updated code significantly expands where CO alarms are required:
- Every Storey: Alarms are now required on every level of the home, not just near sleeping areas.
- Corridors: Multi-unit buildings now require alarms in all common hallways.
Professional Installation Benefits
As a Licensed Electrical Contractor (ECRA/ESA #7017533), we provide:
- Hardwired Systems: 120V installations with battery backups for constant protection.
- Interconnection: When one alarm sounds, they all sound—essential for large homes.
- Legal Compliance: We ensure all devices are positioned to meet Ontario Building Code standards.
You wouldn't sleep with your front door unlocked. Why sleep with an expired smoke alarm?
